I\u2019m <strong>Professor Bishop<\/strong>, and I\u2019ll be guiding you through the world of data protection, risk, and digital trust-building. This week is all about laying the groundwork for everything else you\u2019ll learn in this course.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccc What is Information Assurance?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information Assurance (IA) is the discipline concerned with protecting information systems by ensuring the <strong>confidentiality, integrity, and availability<\/strong> (CIA) of data. It\u2019s not just about firewalls or encryption\u2014it\u2019s a combination of people, policies, procedures, and technologies working together to manage risk and secure information.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIA is the art and science of trust-building in digital environments.\u201d<\/p><cite>Professor Bishop<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd3a The CIA Triad \u2013 The Classic Three<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong> \u2013 Preventing unauthorized access to data<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Integrity<\/strong> \u2013 Ensuring that data remains accurate and unaltered<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Availability<\/strong> \u2013 Ensuring data is accessible when needed<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udee1\ufe0f The CIA Triad in Practice<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s look at each pillar of the CIA triad with examples:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong>: A hospital restricts access to medical records so that only authorized doctors and staff can see them.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Integrity<\/strong>: A banking system uses hashing and digital signatures to prevent someone from modifying transaction logs.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Availability<\/strong>: A university has backup generators and redundant servers to ensure students can always access the online portal, even during outages.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd37 The Parkerian Hexad \u2013 An Expanded Model<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To provide a more complete framework, security expert <strong>Donn B. Parker<\/strong> proposed the <strong>Parkerian Hexad<\/strong> in 1998. It includes six elements, expanding beyond the CIA triad:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong> \u2013 Prevent unauthorized access to information<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Integrity<\/strong> \u2013 Ensure information is not modified in an unauthorized way<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Availability<\/strong> \u2013 Ensure systems and data are accessible when needed<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Possession or Control<\/strong> \u2013 Physical or digital control of the data itself<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Authenticity<\/strong> \u2013 Confirming that data or identity is genuine<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Utility<\/strong> \u2013 Ensuring data is useful and in the correct format<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe Parkerian Hexad expands our thinking\u2014because real-world breaches don\u2019t fit neatly into just three buckets.\u201d<\/p><cite>Professor Bishop<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde9 Parkerian Hexad \u2013 Real-World Examples<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are practical examples that demonstrate how each element of the Parkerian Hexad can be affected:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Confidentiality:<\/strong> An HR employee accidentally emails salary information to the entire company. The data wasn\u2019t encrypted or access-controlled properly.<\/li>\r\n\r\n  <li><strong>Integrity:<\/strong> Malware alters configuration files in a hospital\u2019s records system, changing patient allergy info\u2014resulting in dangerous treatment mistakes.<\/li>\r\n\r\n  <li><strong>Availability:<\/strong> A ransomware attack encrypts a city\u2019s 911 system, making emergency response data inaccessible for hours.<\/li>\r\n\r\n  <li><strong>Possession or Control:<\/strong> A thief steals an unencrypted backup drive from a finance manager\u2019s car. Even though they may not access it, they now physically control the data.<\/li>\r\n\r\n  <li><strong>Authenticity:<\/strong> A phishing site mimics a company\u2019s employee login portal. Employees enter real credentials, believing the fake site is authentic.<\/li>\r\n\r\n  <li><strong>Utility:<\/strong> A company receives log files from a partner, but they are in a format that\u2019s unreadable by any internal tools. The data exists\u2014but it\u2019s not usable.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of these cases represents a different kind of impact. A strong IA program anticipates and defends against failures in all six areas\u2014not just the traditional three.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd70\ufe0f A Brief History of IA<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information Assurance originated from military needs. Here\u2019s how it evolved:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>1980s:<\/strong> Classified government and military data protection<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>1990s:<\/strong> Expansion due to the internet and e-commerce<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>2000s:<\/strong> Rise of regulatory compliance (HIPAA, SOX)<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>2020s:<\/strong> Focus on critical infrastructure, cloud security, and AI ethics<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc65 Who&#8217;s Responsible for IA?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IA is not just \u201can IT thing.\u201d It requires collaboration across multiple roles:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>CIO\/CISO<\/strong> \u2013 Set strategy and manage cyber risk<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Governance Teams<\/strong> \u2013 Define policies and audit systems<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>IT &#038; Security Teams<\/strong> \u2013 Implement controls and monitor environments<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>End-Users<\/strong> \u2013 Follow safe practices and report incidents<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddea Case Study: The OPM Breach (2015)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Office of Personnel Management was hacked, exposing sensitive background check information of over 21 million federal employees. Key failures included poor access control, lack of encryption, and insufficient monitoring.
